Abstract

This paper discusses how the topology optimization method can be used as a systematic tool for mechanism design. The method can be applied to the design of mechanisms ranging from sub-millimeter scale MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) over standard scale rigid-body and compliant mechanisms to large-scale variable geometry space antennas and deployable structures. After a review of former work in the field, extensions to the design of variable geometry structures are suggested. Examples include variable geometry antennas and an adaptive wing-profile.KeywordsDesign VariableTopology OptimizationDesign DomainCompliant MechanismMicroElectroMechanical SystemThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
