Abstract
Suriname has a rich inland fish fauna that is readily recognized as related to the 'hottest', most diverse freshwater fish fauna on planet Earth, that of the Amazon River. Most freshwater fish species of Suriname live in the flowing waters of rivers and streams of the Interior and many species are endemic to a single river system. This chapter provides a systematic account of the freshwater fish species found in Suriname, presenting information related to their diagnostic characteristics, type locality, distribution, size, habitat, position in the water column, and diet and reproduction. Some of the fish species discussed in the chapter are: Pristidae, Potamotrygonidae, Megalopidae, Elopidae and Clupeidae.
