Abstract

New technologies demand new requirements which themselves result in new innovation. The advancement of robotics have resulted in unique technological breakthroughs and further need for more. This paper presents a mechanism for driving spherical wheels using alternating current (AC) induction, thus enabling the wheel to maneuver in a unique manner, and permits it to be used for various applications. Thus, the electric or magnetic flux produced by an alternating current is being used to produce a force which creates a torque for rotation of the wheel. The mechanism showcases how Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction can be used to rotate, spin and guide a spherical wheel and more importantly, provide a greater degree of freedom. It also has a great potential for future improvements that can be made with this technology. This wheel can also provide fine controlling capabilities to the vehicle. It has a large number of potential applications in robotics and can be easily combined with other technologies such as levitation in the future.
