Abstract
Since traditional serial (von Neumann-) computer architecture seems to be unable to achieve ionogram data reduction in real time it is proposed to use a computing system with parallel architecture. It is important in this context to distinguish three fundamental levels (time intervals): • t 1 corresponding to the pulse recurrence frequency = time inside which echo information is obtained once; • t 2= time during which the sounding frequency remains sensibly constant so that echoes are comparable; • t 3= frame period = time in which a full ionogram is obtained.
