Abstract

We are currently going through an exciting period of reviving an old and neglected method of extracting fat and transplanting it to various parts of the body for the purpose of aesthetic improvement. Many of us working in this field are actively monitoring and gathering scientific data so as to enable us to achieve the safest, simplest, and optimum technique. Although my experience in liposuction spans over a period of only 2 years, I have had many opportunities to evaluate various methods of extracting fat and harvesting it for autologous transplant. This article relates my recent experience with a technique first demonstrated to me by the French pioneer in this field, Dr. Pierre Fournier. It utilizes only the syringe and a 14-gauge needle or a cannula with a special fitting and does away with the bulky high-powered suction aspirator and harvesting devices. The suctioned fat is immediately transplanted, thus minimizing contamination. Infection is rare. Patients remain ambulant and can return to work in 24 to 48 hr.
