AbstractTetrabenzo [a,c,g,i] phenanthrene (II) and tribenzo [b,n,p,q,r] perylene (III) have been synthesized from methyl 9,9′‐biphenanthryl‐10,10'‐dicarboxylate (la) by the following steps: reduction with H4LiAl [10,10′‐bishydroxymethyl‐9,9'‐biphenanthryl (Ib)], bromination with PBr3 [10,10′‐bisbromomethyl‐9,9'‐biphenanthryl (Ie)], cyclisation with KNH2 (II) and cyclodehydrogenation with Pd (III).The U. V. spectra of these hydrocarbons have been recorded (Fig. 1).
