Abstract

This chapter discusses the structure and function of water oxidising complex of photosystem II and the tyrosyl radical participation in water oxidation, as well as the key structural features of photosystem II water oxidising complex as studied by EPR and Mn-EXAFS. Kinetics of photosynthetic water oxidation and the nature of manganese oxo-clusters as catalysts for WOC are discussed. The review compares the biological site to manganese and ruthenium containing complexes as catalyst for artificial water oxidation. Water oxidation by discrete manganese complexes such as Mn-bpy dimers-Mn Schiff dimer as well as that of ruthenium complexes. The kinetics and the mechanisms of water oxidation by these Mn and Ru complexes have also been presented.
