Abstract

AbstractThis chapter brings together data to unravel similarities and differences in soil chemical changes. Firstly, it is investigated how soil chemical properties change under different land-use systems and how changes differ between soil orders. A general discussion on the trends and study methods is given. From the investigation, a set of general observations on the effects of cropping on soils in the tropics is derived, followed by a discussion on the implications for crop production and sustainable land management.
