Abstract

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new negative thermal expansion polymorph of zirconium molybdate, LT-ZrMo2O8, and suggest a possible topotactic mechanism for its formation from a precursor phase. The successful identification of this phase sheds new light on the pathway by which cubic ZrMo2O8 can be synthesized and allows one to quantify this process using in situ diffraction experiments for the first time.
