Abstract

A new Ho4 cluster, namely, [Ho4(tmhd)8(L)2(CH3OH)2]·CH3OH (1) (tmhd = 2,2,6,6‑tetramethyl‑3,5‑heptanedione, H3L = 2‑[(2‑(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]), has been successfully synthesized via using a multidentate Schiff base ligand, and further characterized by crystallography. Structural analysis shows that four HoIII ions in cluster 1 are linearly arranged. The magnetic study reveals that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under zero dc field. When under an external 3000 Oe dc field, we obtained the effective energy barrier ΔE/kB = 13.8 K and the pre-exponential factor τ0 = 2.8 × 10−6 s.
