Abstract

Purple IrCl 3(CCl 2)(PPh 3) 2 results from reaction between IrHCl 2(PPh 3) 3 and Hg(CCl 3) 2. X-ray crystal structure determination reveals an octahedral complex with trans-phosphine ligands and a short IrC distance to the CCl 2 ligand of 1.872(7) Å, compatible with an iridiumcarbon double bond. Chloride is easily displaced from the dichlorocarbene ligand and the products which have been derived include IrCl 3(CO)(PPh 3) 2, IrCl 3(CS)(PPh 3) 2, IrCl 3(CNMe)(PPh 3) 2, IrCl 3(CClNMe 2)(PPh 3) 2, IrCl 3(CNHCH 2CH 2NH)(PPh 3) 2 and IrCl(CSCH 2CH 2S)-(PPh 3) 2.
