Abstract

Sr6Rh5O15, a new n = 1 member of the A3n+1A‘Bn+3O9+6n family of hexagonal perovskites, has been synthesized. In the structure, RhO6 octahedra form face-sharing linear tetramers, which are linked by RhO6 trigonal prisms to form infinite [RhO3]∞ chains. Magnetic measurements show that each tetramer contains only one unpaired electron due to rhodium−rhodium interactions. At low temperatures, the systems order antiferromagnetically with an anomolously large drop in susceptibility.
