Abstract

The synthesis and single-crystal X-ray structure of a chiral manganese(IV) complex, [Mn IVL 2] · 2DMF ( 1 · 2DMF) (H 2L = Schiff-base condensation product of ( S)-(−)-2-amino-3-phenyl-1-propanol and salicylaldehyde), are described. Compound 1 · 2DMF crystallizes in the orthorhombic chiral P2 12 12 1 space group. In the crystal structure, the interactions between [Mn IVL 2] ( 1), complexes via C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds give rise to an intricate hydrogen bonding network. Crystals of 1 · 2DMF were further characterized by elemental analysis, room temperature magnetic moment determination, IR, UV–Vis and EPR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and circular dichroism (CD) studies. Complex 1 · 2DMF exhibits two redox waves at −0.47 and −0.89 V (versus SCE) in acetonitrile corresponding to the [Mn IVL 2]/[Mn IIIL 2] 1− and [Mn IIIL 2] 1−/[Mn IIL 2] 2− couples, respectively.
