Abstract

Benzimidazole constitutes a major pharmacophore and has a preferred structure in medicinal chemistry. The most prominent benzimidazole compound is N-ribosyl dimethyl benzimidazole serving as an axial ligand for cobalt in vitamin B12. Benzimidazole derivatives play a very important role as a therapeutic agents and possess interesting pharmacological properties. They occupy a central place in drug chemistry. They are also used as intermediates in organic synthesis. In this review, we describe the most widely used synthetic methods of benzimidazole derivatives. Their reactivity with respect to different reagents and biological activities will also be presented
