Abstract

The blue diamagnetic compound Nb 2 O 3 ( SO 4) 2· 1 4 H 2 O was synthesized by reaction of niobium metal and boiling sulfuric acid. The unit cell was deduced from electron diffraction patterns and the crystal structure was solved from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined from combined X-ray synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction data. Nb 2 O 3 ( SO 4) 2· 1 4 H 2 O crystallizes in the space group R-3 (148) with the cell parameters a=10.384(2) Å and c=26.55(2) Å in the hexagonal setting. The structure features covalently bonded sulfate tetrahedra and niobate octahedra.
