Abstract

A synthetic procedure has been developed to prepare a novel type of silane coupling agent. The reaction of the terminal carboxyl group of poly (12-hydroxy-stearic acid) with the epoxy end group of (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane produced trimethoxysilyl-terminated poly (12-hydroxy-stearic acid) (PHS). PHS was subsequently reacted with SiOH groups at the surface of silica particles. The resulting PHS coated silica particles are stable in non-polar solvents. Colloidal crystallization is observed in these dispersions.
