Abstract

The paper studies synthesis of titanium carbosilicides in Ti–Si and Ti–Si–Cu systems under mechanical alloying of elemental powders of Ti, Si and Cu in a liquid hydrocarbon and subsequent annealing at 900 and 1300 °C. It has been shown that mechanical alloying of Ti–Si system facilitates the formation of Ti5Si3Cx carbosilicide as well as Ti(C,H) carbohydride which further transforms into TiC under annealing. The MAX phase Ti3SiC2 is formed in a small amount only after annealing. In addition to Ti5Si3Cx and TiC, a phase in amount of ~40 vol% is formed in the Ti–Si–Cu system after annealing, with the structure of Fd3¯m type and a lattice parameter of 11.12-11.13 Å, being an oxide or oxycarbide of the Ti–Cu–Fe system.
