Abstract

In this work, synthesis of Tb+3-doped TiO2 nanostructuresby sol–gel method for environmental photocatalysis applications is presented. Titanium (IV) isopropoxide and terbium chloride were used as precursors for titania and Tb+3 ions, respectively. The morphology, composition, particle size, surface area, and energy band gap of the prepared samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The effect of Tb+3 ions on the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 was investigated and the photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples was assessed by the photocatalytic decomposition of potassium permanganate in aqueous slurry.
