Abstract

We combined a phase change material (PCM) with an Al/Al3Ti composite with a hierarchical open–cell structure. The porous Al/Al3Ti composites with different Al/Ti molar ratios (Al/Ti = 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11) were fabricated by the combustion synthesis reaction of Al–Ti system and the spacer method using NaCl particles. Open–cell structure could be obtained even when the Al/Ti molar ratio was 11. The combustion synthesis reaction did not complete but proceeded by appropriate heat treatment when the Al/Ti molar ratios were 9 and 11. Large size porous Al/Al3Ti composite of Al/Ti = 5 (160 mm × 100 mm × 30 mm) was also fabricated in a stainless–steel container simulating direct filling into heat storage tank. D–threitol was infiltrated into the porous Al/Al3Ti to obtain the Al–Ti/PCM composite, and the heat release rate was investigated. Al–Ti/PCM composite released heat in ∼4 times faster rate than PCM alone.
