Abstract

In this study, the ability of the halophilic archaeon Haloarcula sp. IRU1 to utilize 6 different carbon sources (glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, palmitic acid and sodium acetate) was investigated. A marked increase was observed in the cell concentration and PHB concentration of Haloarcula sp. IRU1 grown in medium containing glucose when compared to other carbon sources, whereas the minimum cell concentration and PHB concentration was found in medium containing palmitic acid. The saccharides (glucose, fructose, starch and sucrose) were found to be suitable sources of carbon for PHB production byHaloarcula sp. IRU1, whereas sodium acetate and palmitic acid were poor sources.
