Abstract

A one step metohd approach for synthesis of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-containing macroazoinitiator(MAI)was developed by direct polycondensation of hydroxyalkyl-terminated PDMS with 4,4'-azobis-4-cyanopentanoic acid(ACPA)under mild conditions by the use of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCC)as the activating agent and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium-p-toluenesulfonate(DPTS)as the catalyst. The resulted MAI was then used as an initiator for polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate(PEGMA)macro-monomers,and amphiphilic PDMS-PEG block copolymers were successfully synthesized. Results from the characterization of block copolymers showed that the resulted MAI had very high initiation efficiency and the block copolymers had microphase-separated structure.
