Abstract

Optically active 4-hydroxymandelic esters were prepared in good yields and very high diastereoselectivity (up to 96% d.e.) via para-hydroxyalkylation of phenolic ethers. Enantiomeric pure 4-hydroxymandelic acid is available by hydrolysis.
