Abstract

This paper proposes a novel flux modulation permanent-magnet machine (FMPM)with permanent magnets (PMs)on both stator and rotor. It can be approximately regarded as a combination of a consequent-pole vernier PM machine (VPM)and a consequent-pole flux reversal PM machine (FRPM). The configuration, operation principle, and slot-pole combinations of the proposed machine will be introduced. Moreover, this paper will also investigate the key performances of the proposed machine, which includes the rated torque, overload capability, flux weakening capability, and power factor. Then, to verify the superiority of the novel FMPM, it is compared to two regular FMPMs including a stator-PM FMPM and a rotor-PM FMPM. It shows that under the same machine volume and heat loading, the proposed FMPM can exhibit higher torque density, power factor and efficiency than the regular FMPMs. Finally, a prototype of the novel FMPM is tested, and the experimental results have verified the theoretical analyses.
