Abstract

Nano-layered Ti3SiC2 MAX phase is obtained by Si melt infiltration at 1500°C at different times. In the infiltration method Si diffuses through the diffusion routes into the porous preforms to react with the titanium carbide powder. Titanium carbide preforms with the 46%, 41% and 38% porosity, 15wt% monomer and 30, 40 and 50vol% solid loading, respectively, have been fabricated by the gelcasting process. The porosimetry tests indicate that the porosity increases with decreasing solid loading. The infiltration results show that the Ti3SiC2 weight percentage decreases with the infiltration time increase and the hardness of specimens increases with the TiC and SiC impurity phases.
