Abstract

The chemistry of the hypho-(amine)(amino)B 8H 11 system is developed by the synthesis of several derivatives by three routes. [(Et 2HN)B 8H 11NEt 2] ( 4), characterised by single-crystal X-ray work, is prepared from the reaction between B 9H 13(SMe 2) and Et 2NH. Methylation of [(EtH 2N)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 1) using NaH and MeI gives, successively, [(EtMeHN)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 5), [(EtMe 2N)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 6) and [(EtMe 2N)B 8H 11NMeEt] ( 7). Alternatively, a displacement reaction with NHEt 2 on ( 1) or on [(MeH 2N)B 8H 11NHMe] ( 2) yields [(Et 2HN)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 8) or [(Et 2HN)B 8H 11NHMe] ( 9), and a displacement on ( 1) with pyridine yields [(C 5H 5N)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 10). Phosphine-containing derivatives [(Ph 3P)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 11) and [(PhMe 2P)B 8H 11NHEt] ( 12) can be isolated from interaction of ( 1) with PPh 3, [RhCl(PPh 3) 3] or [PtCl 2(PMe 2Ph) 2].
