Abstract

Incorporation of N atoms into mesoporous titania structure using a simple urea assisted template-free solvothermal method is presented. The solvothermal synthesis has been performed in mild temperature conditions and gave amorphous N-doped mesoporous TiO2. Further temperature treatment of as synthesized material gave well defined anatase crystalline framework N-doped mesoporous TiO2 materials. The materials obtained were well characterized by thermal analysis, FT-IR, diffuse reflectance UV–vis, small and wide angle XRD, XPS, HRTEM and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. The photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue and acetic acid were performed using obtained N-doped TiO2 and the results revealed an improvement in photocatalytic activity of these materials as that of the undoped materials obtained in similar synthetic procedure and that of the standard P25 TiO2 catalyst.
