Abstract

ABSTRACT In this study, a simple and efficient hydrothermal carbonization method was proposed to synthesize anhydrous magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) particles with block-, cube-, corncob-, and sphere-like morphologies, and their crystal phase, chemical structure, and thermal stability were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The four MgCO3 particles were, respectively, incorporated into polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to prepare the composites, and the mechanical properties of MgCO3/PVC composites were investigated. The results show that four MgCO3 particles can reinforce and toughen PVC, and cube-like MgCO3 (A-MC) shows the best modification effect.
