Abstract

Magnetite nanoparticles were coated with poly(acrylic acid) layer by a simple and efficient method of photopolymerization. Structure and morphology of prepared nanoparticles were characterized by ATR-FT IR, XRD and TEM analysis. Moreover, thermal stability and content of magnetite in nanoparticles has been determined by thermogravimetry (TGA). It was found that resulting nanoparticles were covered by a thin, durable shell of crosslinked PAA (thus, insoluble in water). Nanoparticles were characterized by a very small size (in range of 6–13nm) and high content of the magnetite (81%). The protective coating on the magnetite surface is a result of interactions between carboxyl groups of PAA and Fe3O4 particles.
