Abstract

Hydroxyproline has been demonstrated in regenerating as well as in cultured corneal epithelial cells after exposure to tritiated proline. It seems, therefore, that the epithelium is capable of synthesizing at least precursors of collagen. Cycloheximide inhibited the synthesis of hydroxyproline. The question remains open whether the synthesis of hydroxyproline-containing peptides or proteins serves only to rebuild the epithelial basement membrane or contributes also to the reformation of stromal collagen.
