Abstract

Abstract YBa2Cu4O8 single-phase bulk superconducting ceramics were successfully synthesized using a newly suggested method of Hot Pressing (HP) at 750°C and 500 kg/cm2 in an air atmosphere for 25—50 hours from a precursor mixture of Y2O3, Ba2Cu3O5 and CuO, obtained by spray drying and thermodecomposition of nitrate solution. Our method allows one to combine in one stage the synthesis of pure phase YBa2Cu4O8 with production of bulk superconducting ceramics with stable and reproducible Tc = 82 - 78 K. Cell parameters with estimated standard deviations were calculated from XRD data: a = 3.841(1) å, b = 3.879(1) å and c = 27.258(6) å. AC susceptibility measurements was carried out. Transport current density measurements on bulk samples are in progress now. The method can be used in the large scale production of HTSC ceramics of YBa2Cu4O8.
