Abstract

1,2,3,5,6,7-Hexachloronaphthalene and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-heptachloronaphthalene were obtained from the reduction of decachloro-1,4-dihydronaphthalene with lithium aluminum hydride. Traces of other hexachloronaphthalenes corresponding to compounds present in a commercial polychloronaphthalene (PCN) mixture, Halowax 1014, were also formed in the same reaction. 1,2,4,5,6,8-Hexachloronaphthalene was synthesized from 1,5-dinitronaphthalene. The appropriate diaminonaphthalenes were converted to 1,2,4,5,6,8-hexachloronaphthalene, 1,2,4,5,7,8-hexachloronaphthalene and 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachloronaphthalene in a Sandmeyer type reaction.
