Abstract

The synthesis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated early antigens (EA), membrane antigens (MA), virus capsid antigens (VCA) and DNA, was studied in IUDR treated Burkitt somatic cell hybrids. It was determined by subeloning the cultures that every cell contained complete and inducible EBV genomes as revealed by treatment with IUDR. Nuclear EA was observed in IUDR treated cells in the absence of EBV specific DNA synthesis. MA and VCA were only observed in cells after removal of IUDR and the initiation of EBV DNA synthesis. EBV DNA synthesis occurred rapidly after removal of IUDR and in two distinct bursts.
