Abstract

Thiophene and selenophene derivatives of the ruthenium hexamethylbenzene dication have been synthesized, and their reaction with [(1-methylnaphthalene)Mn(CO)3]BF4 (2) and Cp2Co was studied. Treatment of [(η5-C4R4S)Ru(η6-C6Me6)]2+ (1) with cobaltocene and [(1-methylnaphthalene)Mn(CO)3]BF4 (2) in CH2Cl2 at −78 °C led to the isolation of trimetallic (Mn2Ru) thiophene complexes (η6-C6Me6)Ru(SC4R4)Mn2(CO)6 (3). Similar treatment of the selenophene complex [(η5-C4H4Se)Ru(η6-C6Me6)]2+ gave the trimetallic (Mn2Ru) selenophene complex (η6-C6Me6)Ru(SeC4R4)Mn2(CO)6 (9). The X-ray structures of 3 and 9 show manganese inserted into a C−S or C−Se bond and two metal−metal bonds with no bridging carbonyls.
