Abstract

Tin stabilizers are among the best thermal stabilizers for PVC. A novel tin stabiliser di-(mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane)-dibutyl tin, with siloxy groups has been synthesised and its performance characterised during thermal processing of PVC. This new stabiliser, called SnMS3, showed good stabilisation by both static and dynamic tests when compared with a commercial stabilizer (T83 1) (DEMOSA). Both stabilizers were compared using the static Congo Red test for hydrogen chloride evolution when incorporated into PVC. The nature and level of wax lubricants used in the PVC formulations were also examined via a capillary rheometer. Stabilisation times were determined for formulations with different contents of lubricants together with Sn-MS3 and a model thermal stabilizer (2,2-dibutyl-2-tin-1,3-dithiocyclohexane). Formulations at an appropriate lubricants ratio were defined and evaluated in PVC for the stabilising effect of Sn-MS3.
