Abstract

A continuous series of solid solutions in the system of cadmium and calcium hydroxyapatite, Calo.,Cd,HA (x= 0-lo), was successfully synthesized by both high-temperature mixing method and low-temperature mixing method at 200°C for 12 hours under hydrothermal conditions. The samples were characterized by chemical analysis, electron microscope observation and X-ray powder-pattern fitting. The lattice dimensions, Cd/(Cd + Ca) mole ratio, and the site of the metal ions of the solid soluttons were determined by the Rietveld method. The lattice dimensions of the solid solutions prepared by both of the methods varied linearly with Cd contents. It was found that Cd ions in the solid solutions prepared by these two methods preferentially occupied M (2) site in the apatite structure.
