Abstract

γ-Butyrolactones were obtained in good yields and high regioselectivity by a Baeyer–Villiger oxidation with H2O2 catalysed by methyltrioxorhenium. The lactonization was chemoselective in the presence of double bonds, aromatic rings, and chlorine substituents. A trimethylsiloxy-substituted ketone was converted directly into a hydroxylated lactone in good yield and regioselectively.
