Abstract

BiSrCaCuO has been synthesized with different amounts of lead additive, via the solid state method under standardized conditions. An optimum lead content (about 15%) is found that represents the best compromise between its beneficial influence on 2223 phase formation and the detrimental effect due to its lowering of the melting point. Submicron-size regions of 2223 stoichiometry are dispersed widely within the 2212 phase. Slight but definite variations in the T c of the 2223 phase with lead content are consistent with the general belief that lead mainly substitutes at bismuth sites.
