Abstract

Department of Biomedical Science, College of Natural Science, Catholic University of Daegu, Gyeungsan-Si 700-702, KoreaReceived December 6, 2011, Accepted January 7, 2012Chalcones have been reported to have various biological activities including antitumor, antiparasitic, anti-leishmanial, antioxida tive, superoxide scave nging, antibacterial, a nd PTP1B activity. Due to the limited naturalresources, we had to prepare sizable quantities of biologically active chalcones for bio-tests. Therefore,Claisen-Schmidt condensation between substituted acetophenones and corresponding aldehydes enabled us toprepare chalcones for inflammatory studies. Chalcones thus prepared showed significant suppression of nitricoxide (NO) production at 10 µM. Key Words : Chalcones, Claisen-Schmidt condensation, Anti-inflammatory studies, EDDA, NO productionIntroductionIt has been known that chalcones are important precursorsfor flavonoid biosynthesis.
