Abstract

Initial elements were mixed to yield an average starting composition corresponding to Ti 24 at. pct Al 11 at. pct Nb, mechanical alloying was carried out at room temperature, and the alloyed powder was examined by using X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction patterns of the elemental blend powders mechanically alloyed for different times are discussed, and it is concluded that the mechanical alloying led to the synthesis of a B2 (bcc) phase after three hours of milling, which transformed into an fcc phase after 14 hours of milling. The formation of a ternary supersaturated solid solution of niobium and aluminum in titanium with an hcp structure is observed, which again transformed into an fcc phase on continued milling. 29 refs.
