Abstract
Abstract Adsorption of various ligands onto maghemite particles has been investigated in aqueous medium aiming at the production of magnetic liquids (ferrofluids) stable in a large range of pH. The formation of complexes with the structural iron of the surface oxide causes drastic changes in the stability of the colloid dispersion. The flocculation ranges have been established as a function of pH for maghemite particles in presence of ligands such as α-hydroxy or thiol polycarboxylic acids and arginine hydroxamate. The stability behavior of the systems has been correlated with adsorption isotherms.
