Abstract

A novel Zn–7Fe–3P master alloy has been synthesized in this paper, by promoting the reaction of Fe–30P alloy with Zn melt. The phosphide in the master alloy is Zn3P2, which will be in–situ transferred into AlP when it is applied to refine primary Si of A390 alloy at 720 °C. Compared with Fe–30P and Al–7Fe–3P, the Zn–7Fe–3P master alloy exhibits the best refining performance. The underlying mechanism was discussed based on thermodynamic analysis. The Zn–7Fe–3P master alloy is regarded promising for application in low pressure casting industries.
