Abstract

3H-1,8,9-Trimethylthieno[3′,2′:6,7]naphtho[2,1-b]pyran-3-one, a potential photobiological agent, was synthesized in six steps starting from commercially available 2,7-naphthalenediol. The key step involved is a Newman–Kwart rearrangement of naphthopyrone 2. The structures of 6 and its precursors were fully characterized and their absorption and fluorescence spectra recorded.
