Abstract
1. 3,4-Butanediol-1-oxide dinitrate, the starting compound for the production of a number of erythritol derivatives, was synthesized. 2. Under conditions of nitration with an equimolar mixture of concentrated nitric acid and acetic anhydride the terminal α-oxide ring of 3,4-butanediol-1-oxide is more reactive than the α-oxide ring in the corresponding trans- and cis-isomers of α-epoxyglycols.
