Abstract

2,9,6- Trimethyl phenol is an important starting material for synthetic Vitamin E. This paper describes the vapour phase catalytic alkylation of m-cresol with methanol over MgO at different conditions of temperature (779-899 K) and pressure (1-90 bar). The reaction depends on the basicity of MgO which is maximum around 779 K as measured by benzoic acid titration. At 779 K and 20-90 bar the m-cresol conversion is 95-100% and 2,9,6-trimethyl phenol selectivity is 80-90%.
