Abstract

Two new complexes, [Cu3(2,2′-bpy)2(H2O)2(p-hbza)2(OH)2](NO3)2·2H2O (1) and [Cu2(2,2′-bpy)2(p-hbza)3(NO3)]·2H2O (2) (p-Hhbza = p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,2′-bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses as well as magnetic measurements. For compound 1, the trinuclear clusters is extended into 1D chains through hydrogen-bonding and further assembled into 2D supramolecular layers through hydrogen-bonding. The dinuclear clusters in 2 is pairwise aggregated to form H-bonded dinuclear motifs, which are held together by O–H···O hydrogen bonds into 1D chains and further assembled also via O–H···O hydrogen bonds into 2D supramolecular networks. Variable temperature magnetism of 1 and 2 suggests a weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling exchange (J = 41.723 (4) cm−1 for 1, J = −35.52 (5) cm−1 for 2).
