Abstract

A novel manganese(II) coordination polymer [Mn(bpy) 2(μ 2-S 6)] n 1 (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) has been synthesized by low-temperature solid-state reaction. Single crystal X-ray analyses reveal that compound 1 possesses a new type of two-dimensional (2-D) framework structure. Each Mn(II) ion, located on an inversion center of distorted octahedron, is six-coordinated by four nitrogen atoms from the bpy ligands and two sulfur atoms from the μ 2-S 6 ligands. The compound 1 was characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra and UV–visible spectra. The third-order non-linear optical (NLO) properties were also investigated and they exhibit nice non-linear absorption and self-defocussing performance with modulus of the hyperpolarizability ( γ) 6.56 × 10 −30 esu for 1 in a 2.5 × 10 −4 mol dm −3 DMF solution.
