Abstract

A μ 2-dicarboxylato bridged dinuclear manganese(II) Schiff base complex [Mn 2(L 1) 2(NCS) 2] ( 1), { L 1 = C 13 H 9 N 2 O 2 - } and a mononuclear manganese(III) Schiff base complex [Mn(L 2)(N 3)(H 2O)] ( 2), { L 2 = C 19 H 20 N 2 O 4 - 2 } have been synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectra (only complex 2). Structures of both the complexes are established by single crystal X-ray analysis. A variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurement study has been performed for complex 1 and the result indicates there is a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction ( J = −0.41 ± 0.02 cm −1) between the two manganese(II) centres. Complex 2 forms a dimer through strong hydrogen bonding and the room temperature magnetic moment value shows there is no significant interaction between the low spin manganese(III) centres connected through hydrogen bonds.
