Abstract

New saturated dimeric Er(III)-chelated model complexes based on benzoate and bipyridine ligands were synthesized through a ligand-exchange reaction in the presence of the Er(III) ion and potassium benzoate salts. The crystal structure of the novel 8-coordinated dimeric complex, [Er 2(benzoate) 6(bipyridine) 2], involving four bridging and two chelating benzoate ligands and two bipyridine ligands, was determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The dimeric Er(III)-chelated complex has an asymmetric unit with a Er(1)–Er(2) distance of 4.33 Å and its crystal exhibited a very strong intensity near-IR emission, taking place from the first excited state ( 4I 13/2) to the ground state ( 4I 15/2) in the region of 1.53 μm.
