Abstract

Colorless crystals of CuL, where L = 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde-N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)methylamine, were obtained by self-assembly of 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde-N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)methylamine and Cu(NO3)2·4H2O in 2:1 (v/v) CH3OH–H2O. The Cu(II) complex was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The monoclinic crystal belongs to space group P21/c with a = 10.3028(14) A, b = 14.0255(12) A, c = 17.355(14) A, β = 97.474(3)°, V = 2,487(2) A3, Z = 4, Dc = 1.344 g cm−3, μ = 0.913 mm−1, F(000) = 1,060, and final R = 0.0563, ωR = 0.0995. In the crystal structure, each Cu(II) atom is five-coordinated in a distorted square pyramid environment by two phenolic O atoms and three N atoms from the ligand. The molecules form a one-dimensional chain structure by intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction. The electrochemical properties of the Cu(II) complex were investigated.
