Abstract

3-(4-cyanophenylazo)-2,4-pentanedione (L) was synthesized and characterized by several spectral techniques. The synergistic effect of iodide ions on the inhibition of carbon steel corrosion in 0.5 M H2SO4medium by (L) was studied by experimental and theoretical methods. It was found that the addition of potassium iodide (KI) to acidic solution having L stabilized the adsorption of L molecules on the metal surface. The optimal mass ratio was found to be [L]/[KI] = 1 while the values of the synergy parameter (Sθ) are found to be greater than unity in all cases. There is a perfect approval between the experimental results and the theoretical calculation.
